In the memory of world famous lndian musician Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, ICCR has initiated a «Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Fellowship for Music» which will be available to foreign musicians/artists/scholars to do research in the field of lndian music. Under this programme, the selected Fellow is affiliated, on the basis of mutual consent, to an academic/cultural institution in India. Fellowships are for eminent musicians/artists/scholars with preven knowledge in the field of music with atleast 10 years of practical/research experience and should be above the age of 35 years on the date of application.

Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi (February 4, 1922 – January 24, 2011) was a legendary lndian classical vocalist and one of the greatest artists of his generation. Hailed as the Tansen of India, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was born in Gadag district of the Southern State of Karnataka, India. He was renowned far the khayal farm of singing and belonged to the Kirana Gharana which was faunded by the famed Listad Abdul Karim Khan. Pt. Joshi was the flagbearer of Hindustani classical music by bringing it more closer to a common man. He was awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975, Padma Shri in 1972 afterwards, Padma Bhushan in 1985 and lndia’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna was bestowed on him in 2008. The illustrious life of Pandit Ji is an inspiration far many generations in classical music to come. He had such a distinguished and powerful voice with a fine musical sensibility and an unwavering grasp of the fundamentals that made him the supreme Hindustani vocalist, practicing a subtle fusion of intelligence and passion that imbued life and excitement to his music. Such was Pt. Joshi’s talent that he effortlessly changed tracks from classical music to abhang, natyageet (musical Drama), semi-classical and even a playback singing in Bollywood cinema, his composition far a short film on national integration, «Mile Sur Mera Tumhara … » was a massive hit at that time. He was noted far his international concerts, between 1964 to 1982 he perfarmed in countries like Afghanistan, ltaly, France, Canada and USA. The music maestro’s soulful khayal renderings, bhajans and abhangs continue to enthral music lovers.

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan (3 March, 1931 – 17 January, 2021) was one of the most celebrated artists of Hindustani classical music. He was born and raised in the Badayun district of Uttar Pradesh, belonging to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. His father, Ustad Waris Hussain Khan was the son of famous musician Ustad Murred Baksh, while his mother, Sabri Begum, was the daughter of Ustad lnayat Husain Khan, credited as the founder of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana of music. With his exceptional singing abilities and deep understanding of every nuance, Ustad Ji’s presence in the lndian classical music made the cultural world richer, known as the grandeur and torchbearer of the Hindustani classical music. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, followed by Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018, he was Vibhushan in 2018, he was also presented with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest lndian recognition given to practicing artistes. Ustad Ji brought highest glories to his motherland with awe-inspmng musical performances around the world. His versatility and openness to all forms of music, a rarity in classical maestros of his time established him as one of the most successful musicians of Bollywood and Guru to eminent musicians like Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Ut Rashid Khan (also his nephew), Waheeda Rehman, Geeta Dutt, Hariharan, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinoy and Shilpa Rao. Besides, he was also invited to sing for Marathi and Gujaarati films and composed music far more than 70 documentaries of the Films Division. lnterestingly, he also played the role of Baiju Bawra in the German documentary «Rainmaker».
