This book is the first in Spanish to be devoted exclusively to providing an introduction to the music and performing arts of India through an analytical examination of some of its most representative systems and genres. The project that gave rise to it is the result of the joint and coordinated efforts of several authors whose professional careers are linked to the cultures of South Asia. In addition to providing an initial introduction to some of the central concepts and phenomena of the Indian musical world, the texts gathered here offer an overview of its main musical instruments (particularly the sitar and the southern vina), the fundamental concepts of Carnatic music (whose musical language developed and continues to be practised in the four states that make up the south of the country), an analysis of the characteristic features of a ‘raga’ from that tradition, the study of traditional singing (which in the East corresponds to the realm of classical music), and an introduction to two major genres of dance and theatre from South India: ‘Bharata Natyam’ and ‘Kathakali’. In all cases, the presentation of the technical and specific content of these arts is balanced with the aim of communicating them directly and effectively.
