The project that gave rise to it is the result of the joint and coordinated efforts of several authors whose professional careers are linked to the cultures of South Asia. In addition to providing an initial introduction to some of the central concepts and phenomena of the Indian musical world, the texts gathered here offer an overview of its main musical instruments (particularly the sitar and the southern vina), the fundamental concepts of Carnatic music (whose musical language developed and continues to be practised in the four states that make up the south of the country), an analysis of the characteristic features of a \u2018raga\u2019 from that tradition, the study of traditional singing (which in the East corresponds to the realm of classical music), and an introduction to two major genres of dance and theatre from South India: \u2018Bharata Natyam\u2019 and \u2018Kathakali\u2019.
